M A K E U P

After 3 years of clean makeup recommendations going down in the Instagram DMs, I figured it was time to put all my brands and suggestions in one spot for you all to have. Now, let’s address the obvious - Good JuJu Herbal is not, and never will be, a cosmetics producer. We make 100% natural, everyday, “staple” body care products. I am also not a lifestyle blogger (mainly because I have terrible grammar, writing makes me want to slam my head into a wall, my bathroom isn’t painted white, not a single subway tile or giant green jungle plant in sight, and my sink has a really dumb, short faucet). So, why am I tackling this, you ask?

As we all probably know by this point, I have lifelong eczema, contact allergies, and should be living in a bubble - which is why Good JuJu started (if you’re not familiar with the story, you can read it here). The bad news for me is that there are no ~luxury~ life accommodating bubbles available, so I’m stuck living my life with my BFF/life partner BENNY, aka non-drowsy Benadryl. BENNY is always there when I want to get wild and wash my hands in a public restroom.

I’ve gone back and forth on how to tackle this subject for a while. My DMs and emails usually consist of people asking for individual suggestions and products. That being said, trying to take on the general category of natural makeup as a whole is, well, A LOT. But, at the end of the day, I’ve waded through more shitty, natural pink lipstick formulas than any person should and I don’t want the same fate for you.

I also carry a unique stance on adding natural products into your routine. I get a lot of excuses from people such as:

“I know I should be using something more natural.”

“I’ve tried some natural things but I don’t know where to start.”

“I’ve been using _____ forever, but I know I should switch.”

Look, my friends, I am not here to natural shame anyone.

Do I use the most natural of products? Yes.

Having a large list of allergies and consuming Benadryl like a Tic Tac isn’t ideal. Although, it is a huge motivator to find quality, safe products.

Did I immediately switch to 100% natural everything as soon as I found out about my contact allergies? No. I wanted to, but let’s be real, it can be both overwhelming and a price shock.

I stripped my routine down to one bar of soap and only wore makeup occasionally. This is because, at 20 years old, a bottle of off-brand antihistamine is cheaper than that 70 dollar organic, natural foundation. We are all doing our best.

Here’s the point: I want everyone to be using the safest and most truly natural products, but to be very frank, it’s expensive. Switching fully to all natural make up can range from 300-600 dollars, which is basically the same cost as a nice craigslist couch, (you know the one - lightly used, 2 years old, from West Elm). My goal with this post is to get you to the most natural routine you can have RIGHT NOW. Start today, improve over time.

No judgments.

Switch mascara brands and buy the used couch. I support that. This is why I decided to break the post down like this:

AFFORDABILITY: Cheapest option I would recommend. As natural as a drugstore brand can be.

ACCESSIBILITY: Ability to go to a store and try it before you buy it. Medium priced products, 15-30 dollars.

MOST NATURAL: My personal favorites for clean beauty. Ethical brands with great formulas. Work towards these.

I will also link some clean beauty stores at the bottom.
